Gita is document of Hindu spiritualism. The fact is that Gita is a part of the epic Mahabharat. The chapter Bhishm Parv contains complete Gita of 700 shlokas. The backdrop of Gita is of the battlefield of Kurukshetra! Time-the first dawn of war ! The great warrior Arjun breaks down in front of his charioteer Krishn. Arjun is overwhelmed with the realization of massive bloodshed out of killing of all relatives and friends on either side just to gain supremacy. Krishn calmed Arjun with his speech, explaining about his duty and necessity of the war, which was on threshold. But the fact is that Gita is much more detailed document of Hindu philosophy and not just about the relevant situation.
Many historians argue that just before the beginning of a massive war, how could Krishn talk so much of philosophy with Arjun and why? Some researcher has found an ancient version of Gita recovered from the island of Bali, in Indonesia which has only 70 shlokas. The logic behind the tenfold increase in the size of Gita is the same as that of the epic Mahabharat; which was originally written by Mahakavi Vedvyas with 4400 shlokas but with passage of time that grew to become more than one lakh slokas. The same effect is reflected on Bhishm Parv hence on Gita.
